Compatibility Hints
1) Novell Networks
For the highest degree of compatibility, please make sure to include the
following command in your SHELL.CFG (network configuration) file:
EOJ=OFF
By default, this option is ON. If you do not specify EOJ=OFF, you may
get unexplained program crashes.
It is also recommended that you run SHARE.
2) Windows 3
You must run KBSTEAL.EXE before Windows 3 to allow B&F Professional hot
keys to work. You will NOT however by able to use B&F Professional macros
or text pasting into Windows applications.
Back & Forth Pro currently only supports Windows 3 running in REAL mode.
If you run Windows in Standard or Enhanced modes within a B&F Pro
partition, B&F Pro will disable itself.
3) DR DOS 5/DR DOS 6
a) You must turn OFF DR DOS's history command (HISTORY=OFF in the CONFIG.SYS).
b) If you wish to load B&F Professional into high memory and you are using
DR DOS's EMM386.SYS memory manager, you must load B&F Pro in the following
order:
HILOAD BFPHIGHA (or BFPHIGHB, or BFPHIGH)
MEMMAX -U
BNFLOW
We strongly recommend that you use QEMM or 386^MAX rather than DR's
memory manager for better overall performance and compatibility.
4) SuperPCKWIK
If you experience exception 13 problems when loading B&F Professional.
try and turn off advanced disk writing (/H-). You may/may not have to do
this, but it has resolved some users exception 13 problems.
5) FOXPRO+
Several users have reported that FOXPRO+ screws up the EMS state. This
problem has been resolved by not allowing FOXPRO+ to get to any EMS memory.
This is done by making sure B&F Professional is managing EMS (see manual)
and by setting the MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF EMS for FOXPRO to -1 (this basically
makes FOXPRO think there is no EMS memory available).
The best solution would be to upgrade to version 2 of FOXPRO+.
6) Higgins MAILCALL replacement (THIS VERSION OF PROGRAM MUST BE ASKED FOR!!)
Since several of our users have reported compatibility problems with
the HIGGINS MAILCALL tsr (not with just B&F, but almost every known
program), we have decided to add mail checking to the B&F kernel
(this is NOT available in the LITE version of the kernel). B&F PRO's
mail checking facility is activated/controlled by three environment
variables that must be set before running B&F PRO. They are:
1) set BNF_MAILPATH=path
The path should be where HIGGINS creates/updates its mail flag files.
2) set BNF_MAIL_USER=user name
The user name should be the user name that Higgins uses to create the
flag files with (it cannot be longer than 8 characters long).
3) set BNF_MAIL_INTERVAL=# of minutes
The # of minutes should be the desired interval that B&F checks for
mail.
If an interval is not specified, B&F Pro will check for mail every 5
minutes.
B&F Pro will inform the user of mail in the following manner:
If the clock display is on and the application is in a text mode, B&F
will append the word "MAIL!" to the end of the clock display.
B&F Pro will also ring every 15 seconds to inform the user of waiting
mail. If the mail is URGENT, the ring will be done twice.
To terminate the mail prompt, the user should press ESC. B&F Pro will
NOT interrupt the foreground program like the Higgins MAILCALL program.
7) Higgins 2.4 and later
Higgins comes with a limited version of our Back & Forth program. Both
Back & Forth and Back & Forth Pro use the same API calls.
In order to use Back & Forth Pro with Higgins, you will need to add the
supplied NOBNFPRO tsr to your Higgins batch file. This file will convince
Higgins that B&F/B&F Pro is NOT in memory.
You will have to run Higgins without the task switching option for all this
to function properly. Please consult your Higgins manual on how to disable
the task switching portion.
8) CodeView 3.14 and other programs based on Miscrosoft's DOS extender
Back & Forth Pro will disable itself if any program based on the
Microsoft DOS Extender is run within B&F PRO. The only programs currently
known to use the Microsoft DOS extender are Microsoft Windows in Standard
mode and Microsoft's debugger program CodeView.
8) Video-7 video cards and Novell Networks
The Video-7 BIOS will disable Novell on a work station if B&F Pro uses its
extended VGA support. If you have a Video 7 card in your system and
experience such a problem, you will need to run B&F Pro with the following
command line option:
B&FPRO VIDEO:VGA
or
B&FHIPRO VIDEO:VGA
9) UltraVision
Back & Forth is configured to take full advantage of UltraVision. If you
load UV before B&F PRO, B&F PRO will automatically allow the UV video mode
to be set (this is done in the program editor).
10) AutoCad 386 and other programs based on Pharlap DOS-Extenders
For Back & Forth to task switch out of a program using one of the Pharlap
DOS Extenders, you must have the following environment variable set on the
system will "lock" during a task switch.
SET DOSX=-INTMAP 8
11) Some VGA cards!
It has been reported to us that several monochrome monitors to NOT like
the extended video card initialization that B&F Pro does when it is
first invoked (B&F Pro does this to determine the chip set in use). If
you experience this problem, run B&F Pro as follows:
B&FPRO VIDEO:VGA
or
B&FHIPRO VIDEO:VGA
12) WordStar 5/5.5/6.0
Since recommending a different word processor probably isn't acceptable,
you will need to set the PASTE delay option to at least 20 if you plan
on using B&F Pro macros/shorthand sequences... if you do not, you are
guaranteed to loose characters!
